They all head to their dormitory for the first time, find themselves in a tussle with a weird shadow creature, and discover the power to summon Patronus-style demons called Personas. Go to normal classes, sift through boring homework, and deal with the angst of teenage love as you wait every day for demon bashing to begin….
Summon personas to fight for you, use weapons, or wield magic spells assumedly learnt in magic class of the science of wizardry. The turn-based battles are sublime in Persona 3, with stunning backdrops for every fight and terrifying enemies that will leave you looking forward to doing that virtual homework in the morning!
Seriously, how many of you can remember playing this game. I think this thing stayed in my disc drive for about 6 months solid! Two races living in seclusion, a spiritual stone that has them up in arms and creating a massive argument….
Still, XII has always been one of my favourites in the canon and more than holds its own with modern RPGs on all the new consoles coming out today….
Can you believe that this was the first Final Fantasy game to boast open world gameplay? It also gave players more control over other party companion characters and what actions they can perform in battle. Gamers start off in Ivalice, a region that is constantly at war. Follow a princess who has joined the resistance and taken up life as a pirate. Like Fire Emblem and Tactics Ogre, players must plan moves in advance if they have a hope of coming out of tussles with enemies alive.
Calculate your attacks and make every hit count! RPG fans will love the need to purchase spells and nurturing specific character traits. Sony fans will no doubt know all about Dante and the epic Devil May Cry series. Dante appears as a boss pretty early on in the game, and if you manage to beat him in the right way, you can actually take him along on the adventure with you as a party member. It follows on from Persona 3 and sees players returning to high-school life for more mystery, murder, and mayhem.
All of the same features from the last game apply once more, including the use of personas in battle. This time, however, players delve into a TV world to try and figure out why corpses keep appearing in their sleepy, one-horse town. A new feature to the series is a weather forecast system, with events only happening at certain times of day if weather conditions are met.
Also, being able to place objects in its post-apocalyptic hub worlds, just to be teleported to the future to see the settlement come to life, was always joyous. Final Fantasy X is sweeping, romantic epic following a fish out of water in a greatly changed world, filled with themes of religion and loss, and a pair of star-crossed lovers at its heart.
While its CTB battle system removes the more active element present in previous Final Fantasy games, it gave a much more strategic set of tools to the player, letting them swap out party members that are better fit for any given enemy type, and a clear view of how your choices will impact the battle. As addictive as the early Diablo games were on the PC, for a while it seemed as though that particular action role-playing hack and slash genre couldn't really flourish on consoles.
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance finally proved otherwise, showing just how well it could work on a controller. Dark Alliance proved fiendishly addictive in its own right, and it certainly didn't hurt that the detailed character models and revolutionary water effects served as a real showcase for the graphical prowess of the PS2.
Without this game, we may well not have ever gotten those incredible console ports of Diablo III. If Persona 3 cracked the door open for Western audiences to appreciate the series, Persona 4 kicked it down. Wrapped up in a vicious murder mystery plot, Persona 4 is really about the laughs, triumphs, and heartaches you experience with your friends from Inaba. A big change was the ability to control each character during battle individually rather than through AI, and the mix of turn-based combat and novel Persona fusion system is still fun today.
And we haven't even started on the incredible soundtrack. Persona 4 was one of the last great games to be released on PS2. Developer: Vanillaware, Atlus. Developer: Media. Radiata Stories. What makes it particularly special is that it is told in the style of a modern fairy tale or legend and the result is a truly magical experience that will go beyond the generations. If you are looking for a game you will want to play time and again, as well as a world filled with characters you want to know and revisit, then you cannot get any better than Dark Cloud 2.
As a true PlayStation 2 fan and rpg lover, this is probably one of the posts I have taken the most pleasure in writing. But now it is your turn: do you have any favorite PS2 role-playing games that you think belong on this list? What are they? Please share your thoughts in the section below, I cannot wait to hear from you!
I have to say that Kingdom Hearts will always be my favorite. They finally released the 3rd this one 10 years later when I am a bit too old to play the video game and of course Kairi is missing again! I was also a big fan of all the final fantasy since play station 1. Inevitably I played all of them for Play station 2 as well. Have you played this gamed called Fatal Frame? It is about these twin sisters exorcising the spirits with their camera that has this power that will send the spirit to heaven.
Check out that game I love it. Hey Nuttanee, we never get old as long as we do no stop playing! Personally every Kingdom Hearts puts me in good spirits, it is one of the most positive series I have ever played.
The third installment does not disappoint, trust me. Not sure why, maybe I prefer something more positive and that I can talk to my kids about. This does not take away that I might be making a top 5 survival horror games, sooner or later… I realize I played a few anyway. As usual, thank you very much for your nice comment, till next retro post! These games make me think of the old RPGs I used to play before it was uncool to have turn based battles. I love the new games too, but these have a special place in my heart!
Hello Robert and thanks for your nice comment. Do not worry about commenting on old games, old is gold on this blog. Good gameplay never dies! Thanks again for stopping, hope you stay as a regular. Your email address will not be published.
