You are making a mistake somewhere. There should be nothing stopping you making a shortcut on the desktop. An alternative way of making the shortcut is to find the WMP entry in your Start menu, right-click on it, select More, select Open file location, copy the WMP shortcut that you are then shown and paste that shortcut onto your desktop.
