Now begin to wet the chips one by one, take your time and be careful not to get anything on the motherboard itself. Keep alternating between the end of the bud soaked in rubbing alcohol and the dry end of the cotton bud. You may also find some of this gunk surrounding the chip. While you have the rubbing alcohol out you should clean the heatsinks before moving on. If you look back to the previous page at the pictures of the heatsinks you will see they also have the gunk on them. Clean this off in the exact same way as you did the chips, just use a cotton bud to wipe it with alcohol then use the dry end to clean. Now we move back to the chips which should have a mirror like finish similar to those in the diagram below. If you have this and you are satisfied then you are ready to move onto the next step.
If not then keep cleaning to your hearts content. Now we begin to apply the Arctic Silver 5. Again take your time as this can be a delicate process. You need to spread the compound around the chip using your cotton bud, if you need to apply more compound then do so. Once you are happy that all three chips are covered sufficiently you need to take a small piece of plastic old credit card is recommended. And gently flatten out the compound so that the surface is relatively flat on all three chips.
Your chips should look similar to those in the diagram below. Once you have this done your next job is to install the new kit, the screws and washers. Once they are resting on the screws Tighten the 8 screws so that the heatsinks are held in place. When tightening be careful not to slip and damage the motherboard. When finished both sides of the motherboard should look similar to the diagrams below.
Now take the motherboard and place it back into the metal casing. Once it is back in the case you need to reconnect the following hardware. The disk drive, and the fan unit. I recommend plugging the fan into the socket but not placing it securely back in as you will need to disconnect it soon. It should look something like the diagram below. Now connect your video and power cable to the Xbox, yes your console is still open so be careful as electricity kills! Use a sharp object to press the tiny button in the middle of the circuit board and your Xbox will turn on.
You should hear and see the fans booting up and yes you will still have the 3 red lights. Is that bad? I suggest leaving your Console switched on with the two red lights for 10 minutes then switching the console off using the sharp object again to press the button on the front circuit board.
